Apertures: Outopia, Eutopia and Other Spaces

Doors, windows and apertures of all sorts have been important motifs in the artworks of Degas and Matisse but also countless other artists. Degas’ many ballet scenes contain doors and windows but at times, framed mirrors in the shape of doors. Matisse throughout his career included doors and windows even in his early graduation works as well as in numerous pre-teen works in the Fauve style, and after in his Notre Dame series. In his 20s, 30s and 40s indoor scenes with women, apertures are ever-present. There is an element of mystery necessarily associated with facing these thoirai (doors), an aura of the unknown that simultaneously invites and repulses the viewer. On the one hand he/she desperately wants to enter and discern whatever exists on the opposite side, and on the other, the fear of that discovery is almost sublime. It was always the avant-garde who played the role of scout who proceeded ahead of the rear-guard or troops, so that he could return and report on what lay ahead. The term is borrowed from the vocabulary of war strategy and was defined thoroughly by Renato Poggioli in his book, The Theory of the Avant-Garde.
We can also categorize those artists ahead of their time as Avant-Garde and look to them for signs of what lies ahead in the arts. Consequently, in this show we’ve included new, fresh and relatively unknown talents that nevertheless are forces to be reckoned with and to be heard from in the near future. It is to these new talents that the art world owes its thanks, for they maintain the excitement of the yet-unabsorbed-by-the-establishment arts. They exist in a place that is not yet established, and can be seen both as outopia (noplace) and eutopia (utopia).

Art is like a light that passes between our sensibilities and the real world. When this light shines upon the world, art presents us with our surroundings viewed as being full of joy and delight. The world in turn, becomes food for thought. When the sun sets and all is without light, art illuminates our sensibility and we embrace this time for dreaming.
Whilst light divides the world into light and dark with clear borders, our stance, or how we perceive the world is often ambiguous. Light is not the one being seen but what makes the act of seeing itself possible. Thus, light confirms our thoughts, revealing the grounds on which we stand in the real world. It leads us to understand and to find out about them.

New Media Art - Mash up of a New Art

Doors Art Fair’s 2010 Special Exhibition, Media Art is organized in aims to provide viewers with a new way of approaching media art and to make an important platform from which young media artists will be able to advance into the art market. In the Korean art market, it is necessary to promote the trade of media art by creating media art-friendly environments for collectors and audiences so that they can be more familiarized with and truly appreciate media art just like they do with paintings and sculpture. We hope that Media Art at Doors Art Fair 2010 will be the momentum of convergence where artists, curators, collectors and the audience become free from their relative or universal standpoints on art and meet with the mash-up of the new art genre. The future does not just come. Instead, we are making it now.

Contemporary art has evolved in close relation with the art market. No previous generation has seen such a complicated environment surrounding art, where the interrelations between artists, commercial galleries, art museums and institutions, not-for-profit galleries, critics, etc. are so vibrant yet convoluted. For a recent example, British artist, Damien Hirst ran his own auction without established auction practices like those used by Sotheby’s or Christie’s, which was viewed as an astonishing gesture in the art market system.
In accordance with the debut of Doors Art Fair, this panel discussion is to invite experts from each art segment in order to examine the roles of artists, galleries, institutions and critics which are all dynamic participants of contemporary art and the art market. The discussion will also lead to an understanding of the uniqueness of the contemporary Korean art market and its system, and furthermore its similarities and differences from international art scenes. Ultimately, it will discuss what roles each art party should take in order to promote a dynamic and sound art trade and the possible principles that young and emerging artists can refer to for their creation and exhibitions. We hope that this program will be of great help for those who wish to comprehend the contemporary art market including prospective collectors as well as active artists.
